In the opening scene we do not see Indiana Jones’ face for some
time. Even without this factor the audience begin to have a good idea of what
he is like. With this in mind what elements of figure, expression and movement
tell us about his character before he is finally revealed? (Don’t forget what
the other characters reactions can tell us)
Figure: tall, robust.Expression : strict, intelligent, brave
Movement : carefully, dedicated.
During the temple scene how are the elements of costume, setting,
lighting, position and movement within the frame utilised to establish Indiana
Jones’ heroic credentials?
costume: jeans wear, jacket, cowboy hat
setting: golden sculpture, mysterious bag
lighting : hard lighting (make this scene very tension and danger)
position: foreground, CU
movement: slow
There are two contrasting sides to Indiana Jones’ character – the
University professor and the swashbuckling adventurer. What items (icons) or
elements of costume signify these two characters? (Try to keep it to as few as
possible)
